Charlton Heston, always cast in roles where he can lead with his chin, is fuelled by purposeful action, decency and high moral fibre in a western which has all the expected shorthand of the genre. The lightweight plot revolves around the adventures of Heston, as Buffalo Bill Cody, and Forrest Tucker, as Wild Bill Hickok, and the opening of mail routes to California. Made during the final years of the B-western (when they were still being produced in batches), this is a lumpy stew of lean crackerjack action and rather earnest, talky stretches.

Writer/director Courtney Solomon makes amends for his appalling 2000 debut Dungeons & Dragons with this efficient but predictable supernatural chiller. Based on the legend of the so-called Bell Witch of Tennessee, it sees a wealthy and respected family in early 19th-century America besieged by an aggressive poltergeist. For four years, the spook terrorised the household, singling out John Bell (Donald Sutherland) and his only daughter Betsy (Rachel Hurd-Wood) in increasingly vicious attacks. Every haunting movie from The Exorcist to The Entity is referenced in the disturbing events, to offer a carefully constructed patchwork of fear. However, while individual elements may seem familiar, they're no less effective and hit all the right scary notes thanks to taut direction and a ruthless exploitation of sound and visuals. The acting is also of unusually high quality, with understated performances from Sutherland and his screen wife Sissy Spacek adding depth to a simplistic yet genuinely creepy story.

In this handsome-looking but lethargic western, special agent Randolph Scott goes undercover to trap the Reno brothers, one of the earliest bands of outlaws who committed the first train hold-up in 1866. The brothers - including Frank (Forrest Tucker), Sim (J Carrol Naish) and John (Myron Healey) - also have an attractive sister Laura (Mala Powers), which naturally complicates matters for Scott. The rage at dawn refers to the historically accurate conclusion in which a lynch mob plucks the Renos from jail.

Director Robert Zemeckis's blockbusting trilogy went slightly off the rails with the second segment, but it got right back on track (literally) with this concluding instalment. Shot back-to-back with Part II, the film is set predominantly in the Old West and offers Michael J Fox the chance to indulge in all the sharpshooting situations that made Saturday matinée western serials such a treat for millions of children (including, one suspects, Zemeckis and screenwriter Bob Gale). As before, the plot revolves around the need to tinker with time and the problem of how to power the trusty DeLorean car so that Fox can get back to the present. And once more Gale and Zemeckis have come up with an ingenious plot and a clutch of in-jokes, including the casting of western favourites Dub Taylor, Harry Carey Jr and Pat Buttram as a trio of old timers in the saloon. The inimitable Fox is again on cracking form as Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd's romance with Mary Steenburgen is surprisingly touching. Using the special effects intelligently, Zemeckis stages a spectacular steam-train finale and neatly ties up the trilogy's loose ends. Look out for a cameo appearance from ZZ Top.

Mel Gibson seems to be winning the battle of the sexes in this inventive romantic comedy from director Nancy Meyers. Gibson plays Nick Marshall, a chauvinistic advertising executive who accidentally suffers an electric shock and suddenly finds himself able to hear women's thoughts. His unique gift sometimes proves to be a mixed blessing, but when bitchy rival Helen Hunt beats him to a top job, Gibson decides to play dirty. Gradually, his insights into how women think, and what they want, bring out his feminine side. Despite the daft premise, this is wittily written and sharply directed, with Gibson effortlessly running the gamut from sheer obnoxiousness to utter charm. Hunt is great, too, as his far-from-perfect love match. A couple of superfluous subplots slow down the action, but otherwise this is splendid entertainment in the grand tradition of those screwball comedies of the 1930s and 40s.

Peter Benchley's pulp bestseller is here turned into the scariest sea saga ever filmed, with Steven Spielberg creating maximum suspense in the first dark moments and then maintaining the momentum with brilliant sleight-of-hand direction. The tale of a great white shark terrorising a New England resort community and the modern-day Captain Ahab (Robert Shaw) employed to kill it is now a classic of the suspense thriller genre. It's also credited with creating the summer blockbuster craze that Hollywood pins its financial hopes on every year. John Williams's Oscar-winning music and the excellent performances of Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss add to the ingeniously mounted tension that cleverly plays on all our deepest primeval fears.

Ancient evil returns to destroy the galaxy in this ultra-hip, socially conscious and clever science-fiction action adventure from director Luc Besson. Bruce Willis's laconic former government agent is forced to save the universe when the secret key to stopping this happening literally falls into his cab in 23rd-century New York. This superb flight of imagination soars into original terrain for an inventive rollercoaster ride and is a stunning achievement that delivers on all levels. The satire is slick, the visuals unusual and the thrills futuristic, and if the Big Apple special effects don't amaze, the camp trip to the resort planet of Fhloston Paradise certainly will. Gary Oldman's villainous Zorg is haute-couture corruption personified.

Robert De Niro played this action picture for laughs and, as a result, had his first hit in years. Made by Martin Brest, director of the original Beverly Hills Cop, it's a variant on the odd-couple theme, as De Niro's bounty hunter goes on the run with an accountant who has embezzled $15 million from the Mob. The accountant is Charles Grodin, whose underplaying is an absolute joy: he looks like a puppy that's lost its poop tray. As with all the best road movies - and this is one of the best - the picture really moves, as a simple air trip from New York to LA turns into a saga of trains and automobiles, car crashes, and skirmishes with the FBI and a dozen other interested parties.

Co-stars Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson here add credence to the old adage "all that glisters is not gold". Despite being shiny, happy, good-looking blondes, they're just not enough to perk up this tired romantic comedy. The movie opens with the couple on the brink of divorce; Hudson has had enough of McConaughey's obsessive pursuit of a treasure called the Queen's Dowry and takes a job on a yacht. Through numerous contrivances, McConaughey ends up on the same vessel (which is owned by an underused Donald Sutherland) and manages to lure her into a seafaring treasure hunt, which just feels like an excuse to have the couple strip off and bask in the Caribbean (actually Australian) sunshine. Will the adventure bring the couple closer together? Is it worth even asking that question? Well, no, as this is a journey mapped out in accordance with the A to Z of Hollywood romantic comedies.

Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat are better known for their comedies, but here they have produced one of the finest home-front dramas of the Second World War. Adopting the docudramatic approach that characterise many British flag-wavers, the co-directors present a nation pulling together in spite of class differences. The sequences in the factory and at the workers' dormitory are particularly fascinating for the way in which they depict the emergence of both a new kind of woman and a new social order. Patricia Roc and Eric Portman stand out in an excellent ensemble cast.
