Faintheart- (2008)

Full Profile vCal (.vcs) vCal (.ics)

The result of a unique experiment, Faintheart was developed on the MySpace social networking website, with users chipping in ideas and jokes. It's therefore a little surprising that so many contributors could come up with so few laughs. The end result is a comedy about a loser called Richard (Eddie Marsan) who spends too much time dressing up as a Viking and re-enacting battles, and not enough time on his personal relationships. He may be dull, but Richard's still more of an attractive proposition than the flashy PE teacher (Paul Nicholls) who takes up with his wife (Jessica Hynes). The film plods along inoffensively and predictably, without inspiration or flair. Ewen Bremner does deliver a characteristically fine performance as Richard's Trekkie mate, but Anne Reid is wasted as his mother-in-law. Basically, the central premise - that nerds can be decent human beings - has been explored to better effect in countless more traditionally produced comedies.

Elizabeth Hurley plays the Devil in disguise in this remake of the 1967 Dudley Moore/Peter Cook comedy. In a contemporary riff on the Faustian premise, Satan Hurley (straight off the catwalk in a plethora of red and black outfits) grants geeky office worker Brendan Fraser seven wishes in exchange for his soul. Fraser uses these to try to attain the object of his affections, Frances O'Connor, while Hurley uses them to subvert his desires. It's extremely funny in places (this is director Harold Ramis at his superficial best), providing instant gratification that you'll forget the minute the end credits have rolled.

There's little Christmas cheer on offer in Big Momma's House 2 director John Whitesell's mean-spirited and largely unfunny sleigh ride through seasonal cliché. Uptight yuletide fanatic Matthew Broderick finds his Mr Christmas title challenged by new happy-go-lucky neighbour Danny DeVito, whose ambition is to decorate his house with so many fairy lights it can be seen via satellite. Ludicrously childish one-upmanship ensues, culminating in an ice-skating race, until the cosy goodwill ending. The more tedious jokes concern a spitting camel in the live-animal Nativity scene, a runaway "reindeer" and flaming pine trees. Awkward pacing, wayward comic timing and jarring changes in tone, from stupid to sentimental, don't help the short-supply laughs. But the colourful winter wonderland settings and adept performances keep boredom at bay - especially from Wicked Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth as DeVito's spouse, who sparkles continuously and sings the closing carol.

After the success of the first time-travelling caper a sequel was inevitable, although this time around director Robert Zemeckis is guilty of gilding the lily. Stars Michael J Fox and Christopher Lloyd return from the original, along with Lea Thompson and Thomas F Wilson, but the script is too clever for its own good and the film gets bogged down by trying to cram in too many ideas and settings (past, future, alternative universes). The effects, however, are even better than in the first film, and the actors certainly enjoy themselves in a baffling array of roles.

Aiming for the tongue-in-cheek frivolity of the 1930s Buster Crabbe adventures, this big-budget fantasy from director Mike Hodges is great fun, providing you ignore the plot altogether and concentrate on the corny performances and cheesy special effects. Although Ornella Muti makes a wonderfully witty Princess Aura, it's Max von Sydow who runs away with the picture as the dastardly Emperor Ming. However, the sheer badness of Sam J Jones as Flash (whose dialogue had to be dubbed by another actor) and Melody Anderson as Dale Arden also adds to the charm of this expensive sci-fi pantomine.

The original TV series had ended two years earlier and Ronnie Barker had even been Going Straight before he was talked back into the role of Norman Fletcher for this movie spin-off. He's excellent and this comedy is one of the best of its kind, but, sadly, that's not saying much. What worked in a tightly scripted half-hour episode falls apart over 90 minutes in a story about a Lags XI v Celebrity All-stars football match that's set up to cover an escape. Dreadful idea - so what possessed John Huston to recycle it for Escape to Victory?

Director Robert Zemeckis's blockbusting trilogy went slightly off the rails with the second segment, but it got right back on track (literally) with this concluding instalment. Shot back-to-back with Part II, the film is set predominantly in the Old West and offers Michael J Fox the chance to indulge in all the sharpshooting situations that made Saturday matinée western serials such a treat for millions of children (including, one suspects, Zemeckis and screenwriter Bob Gale). As before, the plot revolves around the need to tinker with time and the problem of how to power the trusty DeLorean car so that Fox can get back to the present. And once more Gale and Zemeckis have come up with an ingenious plot and a clutch of in-jokes, including the casting of western favourites Dub Taylor, Harry Carey Jr and Pat Buttram as a trio of old timers in the saloon. The inimitable Fox is again on cracking form as Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd's romance with Mary Steenburgen is surprisingly touching. Using the special effects intelligently, Zemeckis stages a spectacular steam-train finale and neatly ties up the trilogy's loose ends. Look out for a cameo appearance from ZZ Top.

This is the first of five films real-life married couple Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh - the so-called "elite of the milkshake set" - made together. As the famous escapologist Harry Houdini, Curtis is half-naked for most of the early scenes, a treat for his teenage fans at the time. When he finds Mrs Houdini, he pays the rent by dreaming up ever more ambitious stunts, including being immersed upside down in a deadly water torture chamber. The movie covers some 40 years, though Curtis and Leigh age no more than 40 minutes, and Houdini's eventual demise has the smack of dramatic licence. However, that won't stop you enjoying this entertaining hagiography.

Steve Martin and John Candy give excellent performances as the not-so-good companions desperately trying to get home for Thanksgiving in this amiable comedy, which sends up the vagaries of the whole American transport system. Yet, the cheerfully astute playing by the disaster-prone "little-and-large" leads ensures that the farcical proceedings are always fun to watch.

There isn't an original idea in the Brothers Strause's copycat feature, which blends bits of District 9, Cloverfield, The Matrix and Independence Day into a standard War of the Worlds invasion scenario. But once the ace special effects and full-on monster mania take prominence over the soap opera plot, it does become weirdly fascinating. The action is set entirely in and around an LA penthouse after a boozy birthday party, from where the waking revellers witness the unfolding horror after alien craft descend on the city. The explosive action includes jet-plane dogfights, a nuclear missile attack and giant tentacled creatures stomping and flying around, while the zombifying "Siren light" adds a touch of George Romero horror into the stylised mix. Events culminate in a freaky belly-of-the-beast climax, by which time this peculiar sci-fi hybrid has mutated into enjoyably bizarre high camp.

In the US, David Koepp's creepy supernatural tale was completely overshadowed by The Sixth Sense. However, while it isn't as smart or satisfying, it delivers a handful of extremely frightening moments and a credible performance from Kevin Bacon as a man haunted by startling visions. Using jolting cuts and stylised camerawork to evoke fear rather than contemporary, effects-driven shocks, Koepp immerses the audience in an atmospheric mystery involving hypnotism, psychic powers, a dead girl and Bacon's son, who seems to share his "gift". The film's biggest flaw is an overcooked final half hour, as Bacon's obsessive, destructive hunt for answers becomes slightly ludicrous. The last scene is a real chiller, though.
